Photo Essay of St Micheal’s Church, Enniskillen

St. Micheal’s church is the prominent Catholic Church in Enniskillen. It plays a role in the story of the McCauley Family as it was the church in which Agnes McCauley (1883) married James Kelly in 1926. If my impressions hold true, it may well have been visited by Thomas Eric McAuley (1918) the son of Thomas McAuley and also Thomas McCauley (1914) son of Bernard McCauley II (1877). There is proof of this in travel manifests that Thomas McAuley visited his aunt Agnes McCauley Kelly for a short time in 1932.

The first grouping of photos captures the outside of the building from the front and back.

The interior is quite traditional and beautifully maintained. St Micheals continues to be a very active parish. The following groupings of photos will highlight the painting murals that adorn the side interior walls and highlight some of the stained glass.

The painting ‘The Queen’s Visit’ by Hector McDonnell commemorates the first visit by a monarch to a Catholic church in Northern Ireland. This historic event took place on June 26, 2012, during Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee tour of Northern Ireland. The painting captures the moment when the Queen crossed the street to visit St. Michael’s Catholic Church after attending a service in St. Macartin’s Church of Ireland Cathedral. The artwork was commissioned by Canon Peter O’Reilly of St Michael’s Catholic Church and is now on display at Fermanagh County Museum. The painting reflects the significance of the visit, which was a groundbreaking first for the Queen in Northern Ireland and a moment of unity for the Catholic and Nationalist communities
