The Children of James Carraher (1879-1939) and Susan McCauley-Carraher (1879-1970).

James Carraher (1879 -1939) and Susan McCauley Carraher (1879-1970).  If one uses the 1905 New York Censes as a starting point, we first find James and Susan Carraher living at 404 East 123rd Street in Manhatten, NY.  The censes indicates that James had been in the country for twelve years, (1893) and had gained his official citizenship in 1900.  Susan had arrived in 1888. Her entry was recorded in the document below. She arrived with $2 on her person and was intending to stay with her brother Edward McCauley.

I still have not found a wedding certificate for James and Susan.  They lived in Manhattan in the early years of their marriage before moving to the Bronx, NY around 1907. Here is where they started their family comprised of seven boys.  In 1920 they would have also had Bernard McCauley the 2nd living with them as he became disabled after being injured while working on the construction of the New York subway system. Bernard McCauley was living with Susan and James Carraher according to the 1920 Censes.

Francis Bernard and Ignatius, followed in their father’s footsteps and worked in construction as bricklayers.  Gerald was a laborer with the Con Edison company. Edward worked as a runner, a freight inspector and later became a family court clerk. John worked as an imprinter.

War service documents also show that five of the brothers served their country in World War Two.  Francis Bernard served in the US Army Air Corps  reaching the position of Sargent. Gerald Carraher served in the Infantry and was stationed in the State of New Caledonia where he was injured in combat in 1942. John Carraher served in the Airforce, Edward Carraher served briefly in the Army signal corps.  Thomas Carraher served in the Army from 1943-1945.

The second oldest. James Edmund Carraher (1908-1925) died at the age of 19. According to the death certificate the cause of death was Malignant Sarcoma Primary Right gluteal Ana.  This must have been a shock to the family. Bernard McCauley 2nd would have died in 1923.  Susan McCauley had lost her brother John McCauley to a degenerative disease when he was 16 years old and both living as children in Ireland. Susan would have been approximating 10 years old when that occurred.

Three of the boys, Thomas, John and Ignatius, married and had children of their own.  I plan to outline those families in future posts.  These writings are only a scant outline of their lives, if you are a relative and have more to share, please reach out to me so that you may contribute and add to their stories.
