I came across this clipping while searching for information on the family. The article was published on April 14, 1911, in the New York Times. There are several errors which one can suggest are transcription errors, but the core of the story holds that the mother in this story is Ellen Aunchman and Gladys is the daughter. Apparently, Ellen lost track of Gladys while she was window shopping. There is no mention of Vincent who would have been about 1 year old.
The transcription errors are that the name Aunchman is spelled Annchman. The family lived at 153rd Street according to the 1910 Censes, but the paper indicates the address is 163rd street. The fact that Gladys was picked up by her aunt Laura Peebles is significant as my father mentions Laura Peebles in his family genealogy notes. His hand-written note is below. Who was Laura Peebles? I thought she may have been a McCauley, but this does not hold up when you examine the McCauley trees and there are no children named Laura. Instead, I suspect that she is the niece of Bernard’s McCauley (II)’s wife Susan Reilly McCauley. That theory will need to be verified.
