Tragedy Strikes the Young McCauley Family

(Part two)

From Bernard (IV)’s Notes:

Although he mis-identifies Bernard as III, the rest is the family story we were told as children. After Susan’s death, Bernard (II) was seriously injured during the construction of a subway tunnel when it collapsed.  There was no year ever given or location of the tunnel. Other notes which source different family members indicate that he became confined to a wheelchair. The 1920 US census form shows Bernard living with his sister Susan Carraher and her family. That censes does not indicate he is disabled at that time and identifies his occupation as a bricklayer.   The 1920 Censes also shows Bernard McCauley (III), age 7, and his brother Thomas, age 5, as residents in the Mount Loretto, an orphanage operated by the Catholic Church located on Staten Island, NY.  No matter the circumstances, it would have been an exceedingly difficult decision to have the boys admitted to the orphanage.
