Susan’s health declines such that she is admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital on October 17,1917, and diagnosed with Phthisis Pulmonalis. This disease is characterized by wasting (gradual weight loss and weakness) and destruction of lung tissue. The disease leads to ulceration within the lungs, causing considerable damage. It was a major cause of death in the past, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. Susan Succumbs to this disease on August 8, 1918. Below is Susan’s death certificate. While a tragic event, the document gives us information on her parents and country of origin. They point to ways of searching and uncovering more about her through other documents. Susan’s funeral is held five days before Bernard’s (III) fifth birthday.
