I am going to start with a document that my father Bernard McCauley (IV) had in his archives. Micheal and Julia Koryn (also spelled Koren) were his maternal grandparents who emigrated from Poland according to this form in 1910, but due to the nature of the copy could it be 1913? Anna Koryn McCauley, their first born, had frequently told us that Julia was pregnant with her while on their ship crossing to America. If this is to be believed, then the Koryn’s arrived in 1913. If one looks at the form with magnification, towards the bottom it notes an arrival date of January 13, 1913, on a ship called the Oceania. Their last place of residence was Tangrod, Poland. The name they used, (or was it mis-transcribed?), when had when they arrived was Koren.

This petition is a declaration of intention to stay in the United States and become a United States Citizen. This petition was completed in 1942 and was probably a more immediate desire considering the United States deep involvement in World War II. I remember Julia speaking Polish with daughter Anna when I was very young. Julia’s spoke with broken English, and I wonder if that made her suspect to those who didn’t know her. Julia signed her application and there is a rare photo of her. I don’t have any other photographs of Julia and so I have tried to use a photo application in order to realize a better image of her. Even with my best effort it is lacking, but I have placed the image below. In future posts, I will explore Micheal’s and Julia’s birth cities and create a family tree.
